Surgery Coding Notes Part 2

Important term used in Surgery 

1.Arthroplasty: Joint replacement. Example: Total knee arthroplasty.

2.Arthrodesis:Fusion of bone. Example: Spinal Arthrodesis

3.Biopsy: Taking a small tissue sample for testing. Example: Breast biopsy using a needle.

4.Anastomosis: Connecting two tubular structures. Example: Bowel anastomosis after resection.

5.Dilation: Widening or expanding a passage or structure. Example: Dilation of esophagus for stricture.

6.Resection: Removing the entire organ or a major portion. Example: Bowel resection — removal of part of the intestine.

7.Excision: Cutting out or removing tissue or a lesion. Example: Excision of lipoma (benign fatty tumor) from the back.

8.Ablation / Destruction : Destroying tissue without removing it completely. Example: Endometrial ablation to destroy uterine lining. Tumor destruction using cryotherapy (freezing).

9.Debridement : Removing dead or infected tissue. Example: Debridement of necrotic skin wound.

10.Cryotherapy: Cryotherapy means treating or destroying tissue by freezing it.

What are global period ?

Global period is the period in which the the service that is related to the surgery performed are bundled  like preop visit and follow up service.

What is MUE ?

An MUE for a HCPCS/CPT code is the maximum units of service (UOS) that a provider would report under most circumstances for a single beneficiary on a single date of service. 

Not all HCPCS/CPT codes have an MUE.

Scenario 1

What you will code if any procedure is performed first through endoscopy approach and after that through open approach ?

As per coding guideline, we will not code for the same procedure performed through two different approach we will code for extensive procedure that is open procedure.

Scenario 2

How you will code if the biospy is performed for a lesion and then lesion is completely excised ?

As per coding guideline, we will not code for the biopsy and excision for same lesion , we will code more extensive procedure and that is excision only.

 

Scenario 3
What are scout procedure, give example of scout procedure in Hysterectomy ?

Scout procedure are the procedure that is inclusive on primary procedure and is performed to ensure the completion of proedure. For example after hysterectomy , the provider perform cystoscopy to ensure the successful completion of hysterectomy and no any abnormality is found.'
